etired
in 2006 after 38 years in education, the first 30 as a basketball coach. =
Tommy
coached at the high school level at Arlington Heights, F.W. Poly, Richland and Euless
Trinity. In 18 years as a head coach his teams were district champs 11 ti=
mes,
appeared in five regional tournaments and one final four. He also coached=
for
ten years in the college level as an assistant at Baylor and head coach a=
t Texas Wesleyan and North T=
exas.
His 1982 TWC team won 30 games and qualified for the NAIA national
tournament. Tommy was an all-state player at F.W. Paschal and played on a
final four team at Wich=
ita
State. He was ele=
cted
to the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Ke=
nneth
Cleveland 1977-78
 Ken Cleveland
starred at Coleman High School and the University of Texas, graduating in
1958. After three years as head coach at Sonora, Ken became varsity coach at
Dimmitt where he built a dynasty. During his 32 years the Bobcats won 27
district titles, 10 regional championships and state titles in 1975,
’82 and ’83. Coach Cleveland was inducted into the Texas High
School Basketball Hall of Fame and the THSCA Hall of Honor. Ken’s l=
ife
was cut short when he was struck by lightning in 1993. He is survived by =
his
wife Libby and daughters Beth, Vicki and son Kevin. His career head coach=
ing
record is 887-277.

ke Smith
1978-79
 Mike Smith was=
the
head boys basketball coach in Victoria from 1972-1998 where he led the Stingarees to 21 playoff appearances, 17 district t=
itles,
10 regional tournaments and two final fours. His head coaching record is
644-221 (75%). He was one of the organizers of TABC and also started and
compiled the 5A Basketball Preview for 10 years. After retiring from
basketball in 1998, Coach Smith took over the girl’s golf program w=
here
his teams have qualified for the state tournament 7 times winning the 5A =
championship
in 2004. Mike and his wife Ad have been married for 37 years and have thr=
ee
children and one grandchild.

rry
Brown 1979-81
 A native of Wisconsin, Larry Brown played basketball at Kilgore College
and Stephen F. Austin
University, gradu=
ating
in 1971. In his 34 year coaching career he has spent 22 years as a high
school head coach, five years as a college head coach, six as an assistant
and 1 year coaching a professional team in Venezuela. His career record as
head coach is 628-313 highlighted by three trips to the state tournament
including back to back state championships at Bryan in 1983 and 1984. Coach Brown w=
as one
of the pioneers of TABC and one of only two coaches to serve two terms as
president.

n Loyd 1981-82
 Ken Loyd is another of the pioneers that helped get TABC
started. He attended Au=
stin
College and has c=
oached
basketball for over 40 years. Ken has a head coaching career record of 770
wins and 405 losses including a state championship at Huntington in 1974 and two at Avinger=
in
1977 and 1996. Coach Loyd has won numerous coach of the year awards and has been a Fellowship of
Christian Athletes sponsor for over 30 years. In May of 2006 he coached t=
he
TABC all-star game and in July he was inducted into the Austin College Ha=
ll
of Honor.

ane Hunt
1982-83
 Duane Hunt gra=
duated
from Oklahoma City
University where =
he
played for Coach Abe Lemons. During his 26 year coaching career he took t=
hree
teams to the state tournament and had a 548-236 record.=
Du=
ane was
one of the original organizers of TABC and was helpful in starting the
Academic All-State teams and the state top 20 rankings.=
In=
1989 he
retired from coaching to become director of missions for the Larry Jones
International Ministries where he and his wife Deanna have traveled to 68
countries on 6 continents. Hunt is currently the Immediate Past President=
of
the Fellowship of Baptist World Ministries.

 A graduate of =
Texas Tech, Mike Kunstadt taught
and coached basketball for 26 years at Corpus
Christi Carroll and Irving, taking his Carroll t=
eam
to the final four and averaging 20 wins per season.=
In=
1988 he
founded Great American Sport, Inc. which hosts Great American Shootouts,
texashoops.com and Texas
Basketball Review Scouting Service. He has also served as president of the
Rotary Club and School Board in Irving.
One of his greatest rewards in coaching has been his personal
friendship with the legendary John Wooden. Mike coached in and directed <=
span
class=3DSpellE>Wooden’s camps for 18 years. Kunstadt
and his wife Gerri have two married daughters, Karin and Kerri.

 A Native of Fr=
iona,
Texas Ray Murphree started his 34 year coachi=
ng
career at Borger as an assistant before serving as an assistant at Hender=
son
Jr. College. He was head coach at Waco M=
idway,
Cy-Creek, Borger=
and Memorial. In 25 years as a head coach, Coach Mur=
phree
won 478-322 with eight district championships and a regional final. Ray a=
nd
his wife Cheryl have been married for 37 years and have two children Mars=
ha
and Jason and three grandchildren. He wants to publicly thank all of his
assistant coaches for making his job so easy. Ray retired from coaching in
2005 and presently teaches math at Memorial
High School.=

Mauldin 1986-87
 Tony Mauldin b=
egan
his coaching career at Boerne Junior High in 1971. After being elevated to
varsity coach after two years he spent two years at Merkel followed by ni=
ne at
Morton. His Morton teams advanced to the state tournament during his last=
six
seasons including state championships in 1983, ’86 and ’87. In
1987 Tony moved to West=
ern
Texas Junior
College. After four years at WTC, he moved =
to Abilene Christi=
an for 5
seasons. The next three years were spent in Africa, winning three national
titles in Kenya.
Coach Mauldin is currently in his 3rd year at Garland Lakeview
Centennial where he has had two playoff teams. He has currently won over =
620
games as a head coach.

Don
Coleman 1987-88
 Don Coleman=
217;s
coaching career spanned 37 years during five decades. His first job was at
his alma mater, Port Arthur Jefferson
where he was an assistant basketball and head tennis coach. In 1957 he mo=
ved
to Aldine as varsity basketball coach where his 1960 team won 3rd
place at the state tournament. In 1962 he helped open Memorial High Sch=
ool
where he coached until his retirement in 1992. His Memorial teams included
four more state tournament qualifiers including the 1966 state champions =
and
an 81 game district win streak from 1964-1971.

been inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the
THSCA Hall of Honor and had 893 career victories.=

ry Schiffner 1988-89
 Gary Schiffner has coached for 34 years, presently servi=
ng as
head basketball coach at newly opened Saginaw High School, which will play
its first varsity schedule in 2006-07. Gary’s
New Boston
team won the 3A state championship in 1984 with a 33-0 record.=

in the
TABC presidency, Texas
high school players were allowed to attend camps for the first time.=

his wife Rhonda have been married for 35 years and have a son Chad =

daughter Tamara.

Charles Breithaupt=

Dr. Charles Breithaupt graduated from Buna
High School and earned his Bac=
helors
and Masters degrees at =
Lamar
University and his
Doctorate at UT. After coaching two years at Buna Junior High Charles was
head coach for 15 years at Hardin-Jefferson (11) and Beaumont Westbrook (4) compiling a 39=
2-92
career record. Coach Brei=
thaupt’s
teams made the playoffs every season including 10 district champions, five
regional tournaments and two final fours. His 1991 Hardin Jefferson team =
was
the 3A State Champion. In 1992 Charles joined the UIL as Assistant Athlet=
ic
Director. He was promoted to Athletic Director in 1995 and assistant UIL
director in 2004. He and his wife Debbie have been married for 28 years a=
nd
have one daughter, Deah.

roy Romines 1990-91
 Leroy Romines coaching career spanned 32 years with the l=
ast 18
in Longview
where his 1992 team won the 5A state championship. He retired in 1996 due=
to
health problems that necessitated a heart transplant in August of 1997. C=
oach
Romines won over 700 games during his head co=
aching
tenure and served TABC in many capacities. He lives in Longview where he plays golf, plays w=
ith
his grandchildren and attends Lobo sporting events. He presently serves on
the board of directors at East Texas
Professional Credit Union.

Garland Nichols coached at Petrolia, Rush Spring,
Oklahoma and Pampa. In=
1987 he
took over the reins at South Garland H.S. where he was elevated to assist=
ant
athletic director for the Ga=
rland
I.S.D. in 2003. After two years in administration he missed the sidelines=
too
much and he returned to South Garland =
in
2005 taking the Colonels to the playoffs for the 16th time in =
his
18 seasons at the helm. Coach Nichols has over 900 varsity wins and three
trips to the final four. He and his wife Sheryl have a son, Colby. Their
daughter Brooke passed away in 2002, but her memory lives on through the
Brooke Nichols Holiday Shootout.

Hamm’s 25 year coaching career beg=

before being hired as the boys varsity coach at
Krum. In his 20 years with the Bobcats, Coach Hamm led them to 16 district
championships (14 consecutive), 14 regional tournaments, and six final fo=
urs
including state championships in 1994, ’96 and ’98. In 2002 C=
oach
Hamm took on a new challenge by being named the superintendent of Krum IS=
D.
He and his wife Pamela have two sons, Jason and Brian, both of whom played
for their dad.

continued his basketball playing career at Midwestern State<=

earning his bachelors degree in 1977 and his MSE in 1993. After his colle=

career Danny returned to Burkburnett where he has coached for his entire
career serving as J.V. coach the first three years before becoming varsity
coach. He became the athletic director in 1995. Coach Nix is married to h=

high school sweetheart, Susie, who is a counselor at Burkburnett High =
School.
They have a daughter, Andie, who graduated fr=

and is a teacher in Wylie where her husband Brandon coaches.=

 Joe Logino graduated from Ri=
chardson
High School in 1970 and played
basketball at Austin
College earning h=

degree in 1974. After coaching on the middle school and assistant levels =

became head coach at Wy=
lie
High School in 19=
79. In
1981 he moved to his alma mater taking his 1987 team to the final four. In
1991 he moved to Rockwall High School as a
basketball coach (3 years), athletic director (5 years) and high school
principal (4 years). In January of 2003 Joe suffered a stroke forcing his
retirement. He works part-time with Rockwall
freshman students, attends church and athletic events supporting his three
sons Jared (22), Jonah (19) and Jacob (16). He continues his recovery with
the help of longtime friend Randy Talley.

 Leslie Broadhurst began his coaching career in 1981 as an
assistant coach at Lubb=

High School. Afte=
r two
years at LHS and one year out of coaching he moved to Borger as an assistant. In 1987 he was
named head coach at Morton where he took the Indians to the regional tour=
nament.
In 1988 Coach Broadhurst became head coach at=
newly
opened Randall High School where he has remaine=
d for
18 years. The Raiders have advanced to the playoffs 10 times including 6
regional tournament appearances. For four consecutive seasons (1997-2001)
Randall lost in the regional finals earning a top 10 state ranking three =
of
those years. Leslie has two children, Brooke, a student at Texas
Tech and Blair a 2006 graduate of Randall
High School where=
he
played for his dad.

before becoming head coach at Goldthwaite where her teams won 10 district
championships in ten years. After 2 successful years at Ozona, Rhonda bec=

teams have appeared in four state tournaments including runner-up finishe=

1992 and 2003. Her overall coaching record is 697-194 including 11 region=

tournament appearances. She also served as president for the Girls Texas Coaches =
Association
and has coached in both the TGCA and TABC all-star games. More than 27 yo=
ung
women Coach Farney has coached are coaching or
preparing to enter the profession.

 Graduating with
honors, Lonnie Gaylor earned his BS and MEd degrees from Stephen F. Austin and his mid-mana=
gement
certificate from A&M. He has coached at Nacogdoches, Marlin, Graham a=
nd
the past nine years at Waxahachie where his teams have been in the playof=
fs
19 of the past 25 years reaching the regional tournament seven times. His
1996 Graham team was state runner-up. Lonnie and his wife Myra, a first g=
rade
teacher, are members of the First Baptist chur=
ch and
have three children. Son Brent is the varsity boys coach at Childress High Sc=
hool.
Lonnie enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf and traveling a=
nd
is known for his magic and card tricks.

Henderson 1998-99
 Danny Henderson
graduated from Longview High School and Austin College
before entering the coaching profession. He was head coach at Liberty Hill
for five years before moving to Peaster for t=
he
past 12 seasons. Nine of his teams have reached the regional tournament a=
nd
four have qualified for the state tournament. His Pe=

teams won back to back state titles in 1999 and 2000. His career record is
currently 451-122 and he coached the TABC all-star game in 2004. Danny and
his wife Aura have two girls; Maddie, 8 and S=

Mike Wacker was a Parade All-American at San
Marcos High School and
all-conference at Texas University before serving as a college assist=
ant at
Southwest Texas and UTSA for five year=
s. For
the past 17 seasons he has coached at Judson High School where the Rockets
have averaged 26 wins per year making the playoffs 16 times. Coach Wacker has won over 400 games including nine distri=
ct
championships, four regional appearances and two final fours. He is the o=
nly
person to play and coach in the TABC All-Star game. Mike and his wife Sus=
ie
have three boys, Chris (17), Karl (15) and David (12).<=

was named Executive Director of TABC, a post he currently holds. He and h=

wife Carol have five children and six grandchildren.

Lufkin, and
for the last five years Alief Hastings where =

Fighting Bears have won four district titles and appeared in four regional
tournaments. Coach Carter has been inducted into the Texas Basketball Hal=
l of
Fame and has coached in both the THSCA and TABC all star games. His wife
Brenda passed away suddenly in 2002 and has a TABC scholarship named in h=
er
honor. His daughter La’Johna teaches in=
Dallas ISD. Coa=

Carter has a 465-246 career record. He is presently the assistant AD in
Aldine ISD.

Lake Carroll he returned to his hometown as varsity basketba=

coach. In 1979 Ken returned to South
Lake Carroll
High School as a
varsity basketball coach. For the next 23 years he led a very successful
program including a state championship in 1993. He served the district as
interim A.D. in 2002-03 and is currently the girl’s basketball coach
and girl’s athletic coordinator at Saginaw Boswell=

where he has coached for the past 29 years. The Mules had a string of 25
consecutive 20 win seasons which included 10 district champions, 9 region=

tournaments and two final fours. His career record is 689-271 and his tea=

have averaged 70% at the free throw line. He says his greatest honor was
being TABC president. Charlie has three children from a former marriage, =
Jennifer
(33), Jonathan (31), and Joe (30). He and his wife Cindy have two childre=

Holly (22), and Clay (15).

n Vick
2004-05
 A graduate of
Abilene High School and Texas Tech University, Ron Vick began coaching in
Lubbock ISD in 1984. After one year at Mackenzie Junior High and five yea=
rs
as Lubbock High School varsity assistant, C=

Vick was named head coach in 1990. In the history of Lubbock High Scho=
ol
the Westerners have made 11 playoff appearances and six or those were dur=
ing
Ron’s 16 years at the helm including two district championships. His
wife Kathy is Head Tennis Professional at Hillcrest Country Club and is
currently ranked #1 nationally by USPTA in both singles and doubles. The
Vicks have been married for 21 years.

Lombard 2005-06
 Joe Lombard
graduated from Northridge High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and played
college basketball at W=
ayland
Baptist University.
His coaching career began at Nazareth
where his boys’ teams were 61-9 while the girls were 240-16 winning=
six
state titles in seven years. For the past 21 years Coach Lombard has guid=
ed
his Canyon girls to six more state titles for a 28 year career total of
934-87. Joe and his wife Babs, who won a state
championship as head coach at Hale Center in 1979, ha=
ve
two children. Daughter Lindy is a JV basketba=
ll
coach at Richland
and son Tate is a senior at Midwestern.

where his teams made 9 play-off appearances. In 2004 Art accepted the
position of assistant A.D. with the SAISD. Art and his wife Edna, an
elementary teacher, have been married for 31 y=
ears.
Sons Javier and Michael played for their father at Highlands and daughter=
Delisa was an all-american
cheerleader at the Univ=
ersity
of Louisville. Ar=
